A couple of days ago I got the gardener’s intuition, “today’s the day”.
It felt like the time for getting the last of the heat veggies out of the greenhouse had come. There won’t be anymore stretches of warmth to ripen those green tomatoes. There are still tons of greens and herbs in the garden. I’m harvesting the tulsi from the outdoor beds but the chard, parsley and kale will stay happily in the greenhouse for now.
And wham. Yesterday was cold. The veggies are chilling in the cabin. The green tomatoes are in a box with an apple (apples create ethylene gas, a natural ripening hormone that accelerates the ripening process in other fruits). I also grabbed some ginger and golden raisins and will be making green tomato chutney today and of yes, of course, fried green tomatoes will be on the menu a time or two…and I’ll get more ripe tomatoes soon!
