Snow Pondering
Lot’s of wicked pow pow falling these last few days. I find all this wintery weather to be a good time to think about landscaping. It’s valuable to observe what looks pretty in all this snow. The evergreens, of course, are a real standout and I wouldn’t consider having a landscape here without some evergreen elements. The way the snow lays upon their branches and the bits of green and habitat they provide…just beautiful.
I have eight evergreens so far, small trees and shrubs. in my front and back gardens and it’s lovely to look out on them. Back in 2021 I planted eight trees in the backyard and I’m so glad I did! They’ve given the yard a grounded, woodsy feeling. Three are towering birch now, my own little grove. Three are dwarf evergreens and two are deciduous flowering trees that will bring Spring beauty. I’ll take some photos soon to share with you.
Just before all this cold, in the nick of time I hope, I planted sixty tulip bulbs along the walkways in the front leading up to the house. The very darkest, almost black purple, light purple and a scattering of pink. I call my house the Pink Lady. She’s like a frosted cake. Old and romantic and a bit feminine.
One of the things I love about design, outdoor and indoor, is considering the individuality of each home and the people that live in them. There is no one size fits all design. Each space calls for honoring the history and essence of the specific home. I never get tired of pondering color palettes and shapes and sizes, textures and light, and the feelings they evoke.
Well now I will bundle up like Ralphie in “A Christmas Story” and take my snow dog out to play. It’s been wild to watch her find her true identity as a natural creature of the snow. Some ancient breed recognition deep inside of her awakened when she first stepped foot in it.
